2010/2011 SEASON – ATOM LEVEL
INTRODUCTION
• Welcome to the 2010/2011 hockey season with Stony Plain Minor Hockey. My name is Michael Thomas and I am the Atom Director for this season. This note is meant to provide information to parents, players and coaches as to the process of evaluations and team selections for this age level. It also contains some of the pertinent details for those who would like to coach at the Atom level this year.
The intent for the season is to make the hockey experience a positive one for all players so they may continue with skill development and ongoing hockey enjoyment.
There will be notification on the website and by phone calls for your first skate.
If we have missed anything in this note, please check the website for more details.
REGISTRATION
*** PLEASE NOTE IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT REGISTERED, THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO GO ON THE ICE OR THROUGH EVALUATIONS. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS, SO PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD IS REGISTERED PRIOR TO THE FREE SKATES ***
A Registration Form will be considered complete if enclosed with the following:
* Payment of hockey fees prior to September 1, 2010;
* 1 Concession 1 Bingo deposit cheque of $75.00 each, post-dated for January 1, 2011;
* Signed Parent Code of Conduct;
* Copy of the birth certificate;
* Release letter from the last known association played for (if other than Stony Plain); and
* All mandatory fields on the registration form are completed.
If a subsidy or a 3rd Party will be paying a portion or the total amount of the fees, please send a note detailing all information for payment, along with an e-mail address that you can be reached at. This type of payment MUST be approved by the Registrar in writing prior to sending the Registration form back, and the registration will not be complete until approval has been given.
Special arrangements for payment of fees can be made with the Registrar, but they must be done in writing and a written confirmation returned to be valid. If fees are not paid in full, or arrangements have not been made with the Registrar, the player will not be assigned to a team.
EQUIPMENT SAFETY
• Hockey players equipment will tend to wear out, or screws do come loose on skates and helmets. Please check your child’s equipment to ensure all equipment is safe. The use of mouth guards is strongly recommended, and is a required piece of equipment in some leagues.
WHO IS IN ATOM?
• All players with birthdays in 2000 or 2001 are eligible to play Atom level hockey in Stony Plain. We currently have 85 players registered at this level and they will be divided into teams. All Atoms teams will be competing in the 16/60 Hockey League and each team will be in a Tier. Stony Plain Minor Hockey will designate Atom AA Tier(1),A(2),B(3),C(4),D(5). Pre season games will allow the league to further determine the appropriate Tier for that team.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EVALUATION?
• The purpose of evaluation is to view players during drills, scrimmages or games to determine their current skill level. This information is used to place players on the appropriate Atom team so that players compete against, and with, players of similar skill levels.
WHAT IS THE EVALUATION FORMAT?
• The Atom aged players and goalies are divided into equal sized groups based on positions played and are evaluated separately. Once you have a group number, you will stay with that group unless you are otherwise notified.
• Each player and goalie will then have at least 1 evaluation and 1 skills session, keeping in mind that each player and goalie will have had one free skate prior to that which will not be evaluated.
Please note that players may move to the AA team after the 1st evaluation game and not get the full 3 evaluation games.
All players and goalies will receive a jersey at their first free skate. They will have to return that jersey after the skills session and will be assigned a new jersey before the first evaluation game.
After all of these sessions, the Executive & Coach(es) will be responsible for reducing the teams down to final roster numbers.
*** For those players trying out for a rep team, you must declare this at the start of tryouts ***
There will be some information on the travel and costs associated with playing for the rep team. For whatever reason, if you feel it is not in the best interest of your child playing at this level, we would like to know this sooner than later.
HOW DO WE EVALUATE?
• We will be using the evaluation process outlined in the package provided. We have hired independent evaluators for players and goalies for Novice,Atom, Pee Wee, and Bantam.
