INTRODUCTION

• Welcome to the 2010/2011 hockey season with Stony Plain Minor Hockey. My name is Daryl McEwan and I am the Novice Director for this season. This note is meant to provide information to parents, players and coaches as to the process of evaluations and team selections fro this age level.

The intent for the season is to make the hockey experience a positive one for all players so they may continue with skill development and ongoing hockey enjoyment.

Evaluations will be beginning on September 11 and 12 with a non-evaluation skate.  Details for times will be posted shortly.

If we have missed anything in this note, please check the website for more details.

Special arrangements for payment of fees can be made with the Registrar, but they must be done in writing and a written confirmation returned to be valid. If fees are not paid in full, or arrangements have not been made with the Registrar, the player will not be assigned to a team.

EQUIPMENT SAFETY

• Hockey players equipment will tend to wear out, or screws do come loose on skates and helmets. Please check your child’s equipment to ensure all equipment is safe. The use of mouth guards is strongly recommended, and is a required piece of equipment in some leagues.

WHO IS IN NOVICE?

• All players with birthdays in 2002 or 2003 are eligible to play Novice level hockey in Stony Plain. We currently have 71 players registered at this level and they will be divided into teams. All Novice teams will be competing in the 16/60 Hockey League and each team will be in a Tier.  Stony Plain Minor Hockey will designate Novice Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4, and Tier 5.  Preseason evaluation games will allow the league to further refine a teams’ placement to ensure the appropriate Tier for that team.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EVALUATION?

• The purpose of evaluation is to view players during drills, scrimmages or games to determine their current skill level. This information is used to place players on the appropriate team so that players compete against, and with, players of similar skill levels.

What Is The Evaluation Format?

• The Novice aged players are divided into equal sized groups based numbers.  Each group will stay together for the non-evaluation skate and the skills session.

 • After the skills session, the groups will be reorganized based on the skills evaluation and evaluations games will be organized.  Each Novice team will be built throughout the evaluation game process.

Please note that players may move to the Tier 1 team after the 1st evaluation game and not get the full 3 evaluation games.

All players will receive a jersey at their first free skate. They will have to return that jersey after the skills session and will be assigned a new jersey before the first evaluation game.

After all of these sessions, the Executive & Coach(es) will be responsible for reducing the teams down to final roster numbers.

How Do We Evaluate?

• We will be using the evaluation process outlined in the package provided. We have hired independent evaluators for players and goalies for Novice, Atom, Pee Wee, and Bantam.
